Mississippi Mud Pie, is of fairly recent origin, or at least it was confined to a very small area until after 1980. Sometimes a recipe will stay within a family or a small ethnic group for years before it is "discovered" by society at large. Mississippi mud pie/cake got its name because it's supposed to look like the thick mud along the banks of the Mississippi River.
